WHAT VEIL MIGHT BE OBSCURING YOUR VISION RIGHT NOW?

This self-portrait emerged after reading the manuscript of the book, Veiled Disciples. This and the other images in this series were all created from and for this book. Through the lives of these New Testament women I began to see Jesus more clearly. They show me the vastly different ways one can be a female follower of Christ. As I reflected on his relationships with these female disciples, my own identity was unveiled more deeply as a living μαθήτρια, or female disciple. Still learning to walk closely with the Rabbi, I can now see more clearly without the veil impeding my sight.

Unveiled

Two pioneer professors,
follow in the Rabbi’s footsteps.
They reveal veils.
They remove them.

Reading their words,
I feel my own veil
tenderly lifted.

Academic wisdom,
female disciples,
united by the Rabbi himself,

restore my unveiled agency
given in ancient gardens.
I shed what was never meant for me,
and rest in my own feminine skin.

For reflection:

What “veil” might be obscuring your vision right now—fear, shame, or someone else’s understanding of who you are—and what might Jesus be inviting you to see more clearly?

Which woman in the New Testament has helped you see Jesus differently, and what does her story reveal about the kind of disciple Jesus is inviting you to become?

If you truly saw these women in the Bible as living disciples, women learning to walk closely with Jesus, what might change about the way you see women in your church, your family, or yourself?
