What Happens When People Leave Church?

Join us for a conversation with author and researcher Dr. Stephen Bullivant whose recent book, Nonverts: The Making of Ex-Christian America, explores the deeper realities of persons who have left organized faith. For many people, a departure from their faith tradition becomes a conversion experience—departing one world and entering another. If you are a minister or church leader interested in the well-being of your congregation or about the people who live in your neighborhood, you will benefit from Bullivant's research!

Intersection: Where Theology and Practice Meet is a series of focused, online conversations hosted by Randy Harris and Carson Reed. Drawing wisdom from special guests and inspiration from timely topics, we create space for collegial learning, reflection, and ministerial action.

Special Guest: Dr. Stephen Bullivant

Stephen Bullivant is professor of theology and the sociology of religion at St. Mary's University, London, and director of the Benedict XVI Centre for Religion and Society. In addition to his positions at St. Mary's, he is Professorial Research Fellow in Theology and Sociology at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney. He has doctorates in theology (Oxford, 2009) and sociology (Warwick, 2019). His studies of contemporary nonreligiosity have received wide international coverage, including from the BBC, New York Times, Economist, Financial Times, and Der Spiegel. He has published multiple books, including Nonverts: The Making of Ex-Christian America (OUP, 2022).
